The Little Yellow Leaf- 31 Days of Activities Based on Children's Books

The book we read today is, "The Little Yellow Leaf" by Carin Berger.

The illustrations in this book are gorgeous!! 

After Aubrey and I read this book, she made a leaf collage.

I just gathered a bunch of leaves and gave her a piece of paper and some glue.

Super easy for me and fun for her!

The fall colors have been so beautiful this year...An amazing reminder of the beauty of God's creation!!

If You Give a Pig a Party- 31 Days of Activities Based on Children's Books

Our book for today is, "If You Give a Pig a Party" by Laura Numeroff.

Our activity was balloon painting. 

I blew up a balloon and put some paint on a plate. 

I gave Aubrey a piece of construction paper and let her paint. 

Aubrey loved painting with the balloon.  She was so surprised when I said she could put the balloon in the paint!

By the time she was done, the balloon was filled with paint. Great for messy, squishy fun!!

**Please use caution if you do this activity. Balloons can be dangerous for children.

Down by the Station- 31 Days of Activities Based On Children's Books

Today we read, "Down by the Station" by Jennifer Riggs Vetter.

We made a kitchen chair train after we read the book.

I just lined up our four kitchen chairs and let the girls play train. (My oldest daughter, Isabella, does NOT like to be online in these kinds of pictures. That is why she is never in the pictures. :)

This is one of my go to activities with my kids when I need to get things done and I want to keep them busy. They set up their animals and take turns being the conductor. Aubrey even put a coat on her stuffed dog so he wouldn't be cold! 

This idea is easy and perfect for a Friday afternoon. I know I really enjoyed the quiet while my girls played nicely!

Chicka, Chicka, Boom Boom- 31 Days of Activities Based on Children's Books

Our book for today is one of my favorite alphabet books for preschoolers. Children seem to love it!

Chicka, Chicka, Boom Boom by Bill Martin, Jr. and John Archambault

Today we made dough letters.

First, we made the dough. (You could also use store bought play dough).

Ingredients-

3 cups flour

1/2 cup salt 

1 1/2 cups water

Dump dry ingredients into a bowl.

Next, add the water.  Once you have poured in the water, it is time to knead and squeeze the mixture until you have a ball.

Aubrey didn't love this part. She doesn't love getting messy! I finished kneading it until it formed the ball.

Once the ball is formed, you can start making letters.

I taught Aubrey how to roll "logs" to make forming the letters easier. 

I found it worked great to put the book open in front of her so she could refer to the letters she wasn't quite sure how to make.

Aubrey loved making letters and I loved that she was learning and didn't even know it!

Money, Money, HoneyBunny- 31 Days of Activities Based On Children's Books

Today we read "Money, Money, HoneyBunny!" by Marilyn Sadler and Roger Bollen. This is a cute rhyming book about how Funny Bunny uses her money. Aubrey is really into rhyming right now so she enjoyed that part of the book and I like that it gave me a chance to start talking about money with her.

After reading the book, I created a little "store" for Aubrey to shop at. I took some of her toys and put little price tags on them.

Here is our little store...

  Once I set up the store, I gave Aubrey a handful of pennies.

Then, she got to shop!

She picked out what she wanted and then had to count out how many pennies she needed.

After she "bought" all of her toys, she decided to make some of her own price tags!

That is her sweet attempt at making a cents sign. Love, love, love it!!

I have a feeling we will be playing store a lot the next couple of days. Aubrey loved this activity!

31 Days of Activities Based on Children's Books- The Very Busy Spider

The book I chose for today is The Very Busy Spider by Eric Carle.

After we read the book, we made a spider web.

First, we went outside and found some leaves. (Hint-Look for large leaves to make the project a little easier.)

After we found some leaves, I had Aubrey peel a black crayon.

Once the crayon was peeled, I showed her how to do a leaf rubbing. I helped her by holding the paper and by making sure she moved the leaf around to all the white areas. 

Next she made a spider. I had her color a cotton ball purple. (You could also use a purple pom-pom.)

Aubrey chose where she wanted her spider to sit and then she glued him on.

Time to give the spider legs! I was going to use this time to talk about how many legs a spider has but she already knew. I love when that happens! 

I had her draw eight legs on her spider's body.

I had to laugh because although she immediately knew spiders have eight legs, she gave him nine legs! Oh well, her spider is lucky and gets an extra leg! :)

31 Days of Activities Based on Children's Books- Where Is The Green Sheep?

Today we read the book, "Where Is the Green Sheep?" by Mem Fox and Judy Horacek. This is an adorable book about opposites and has a fun recurring question. (Where is the Green Sheep?) I work in child care and have read this to groups of children ages 2-4. They all seem to love it!

After we read the book, I got Aubrey set up to create her own green sheep.

First, she colored her sheep and then she cut it out. (I printed it off here.)

 After she cut out the sheep, I had her color the cotton balls and then glue them on.

Once the green sheep was finished, I had her wait in the house and I hid the green sheep. (I chose to hide the sheep outside because the marker seemed a little moist on the cotton balls.)

She found it!!

Success!
She found the sheep and then my girls took turns hiding and finding the sheep. They had a blast!
